Convert CPU graphics to GPU in an easy steps. If your game does not function as well as you would expect with your AMD or Nvidia graphics card, it could be that you are using the incorrect GPU.
Most mobile computers (and, in some cases, desktop computers) contain two GPUs: one integrated and one dedicated.
The integrated graphics chipset is embedded into the processor and ensures that your computer can use a display even if it does not have a dedicated GPU.
However, more demanding tasks, like gaming, necessitate a powerful GPU, which is usually a dedicated one.
Most laptops include power-saving options that cause GPU switching the laptop will use the integrated graphics chipset for easier tasks to save power and switch back to the powerful dedicated GPU when needed.
If your game is operating on an integrated GPU rather than a dedicated one, you will notice lower performance or difficulties with the game.
Switching the game to the dedicated GPU is the solution. This FAQ will show you how to do it for Nvidia and AMD visual cards.
Determine whether your machine has more than one GPU
If you are unsure whether your computer has one or more GPUs, open the Device Manager (Windows 7, Windows 10) and navigate to Display Adapters. Your GPU or GPUs will be displayed.
To use the dedicated Nvidia GPU
- First, launch the Nvidia Control Panel. One method is to right-click on an empty spot on the desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel from the menu.
- Select 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings from the menu.
- Go to the Program Settings tab and select the game from the dropdown menu.
- Next, from the second dropdown, select the preferred graphics processor for this software. Your Nvidia GPU should be displayed as a High-performance Nvidia processor.
Finally, save your modifications. Your game should now be able to use the dedicated Nvidia GPU.
To use the specialized AMD GPU
- First, launch Radeon Settings. One method is to right-click on an empty place on the desktop and select Radeon Settings from the menu.
- Select Preferences > Additional Settings > Power > Switchable Graphics Application Settings from the menu.
- Choose the game from the list of available applications. If it is not in the list, click the Add Application option and choose the game’s *.exe file from the installation location. This adds the game to the list, from which you can choose it later.
- Assign the High-Performance profile to the game in the Graphics Settings column.
Finally, put your modifications into action. Your game should now be able to operate on the dedicated AMD GPU.
