No Nvidia did not invent the GPU, Nvidia is no where exist yet when GPU invented.
5 years before Nvidia claimed that they invent the GPU in 1999, Sony actually coined the term GPU in their PlayStation.
Plus, the fact is that, as is it that any chip that is used to support the CPU with the aim to display acceleration would count as a GPU and these type of chips existed in the 70s in arcade video game system:
- The S3 VIRGE, Nvidia NV1 and Matrox millennium was rolled out in 1995.
- The PowerVR Midas, ATI Rage, Rendition verite V1000 and 3dfx Voodoo was rolled out in 1996
So again, as you can see here Nvidia did not exist yet when first one was invented. See, the thing is that Nvidia claim so from the marketing perfective with GeForce 256.
But what Nvidia Do?
What Nvidia did was to release a product that beat the 3dfx voodoo later in the decade with the TNT2 being competitive with the voodoo2 and the original GeForce 256 being their success story with the introduction of hardware and lighting acceleration.
